Four major charities scam $187 million from donors

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has joined other state attorneys general across the nation in filing a federal lawsuit against four cancer charities.

The “fake” cancer charities scammed around $187 million from donors over the past few years. The charities named in the lawsuit include: Cancer Fund for America, Children’s Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services, and The Breast Cancer Society.

The lawsuit claims that the charities took money that was supposed to be used for cancer treatment and other medical support, and instead used it for personal purposes, such as cruises, concert tickets, and dating website memberships.

Some settlements have been reached with the companies. Five defendants agreed to leave the charity business and stop fundraising. The other settlements have yet to be approved in court.
