High-speed Internet in Iowa is getting a boost. Governor Branstad signed a bill that creates a property tax relief program for those who extend their broadband infrastructure. Branstad made broadband expansion a legislative priority over the past two years. The property tax relief part of the program will be privately funded.
Getting residents web savvy is one of the goals of the Des Moines Public Library. Its director told the city council technology has become a big part of library sciences, and they want to make sure citizens know how to use its potential.
A former Des Moines police officer convicted in March of using excessive force has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison. Colin Boone was convicted of kicking a man in the head during a traffic stop in 2013. The kick knocked out two of the man’s front teeth.
Des Moines police are trying to figure out who swiped thousands of dollars from the police gym fund. The fund is used to buy and maintain the gym’s equipment. The investigation’s been going on for a couple of months.
The Iowa Lottery is ending thirteen of its games. Nine of them are instant scratch games, and four are pull-tab games. Players have til August 11th of next year to claim prizes in the pull-tab games, and September 28th for the scratch games.
USDA says nationwide egg production dropped 6-and-a-half percent last month from the same time last year. Iowa’s egg production fell 28 percent from 2014, and 21 percent over just one month because of the bird flu.
Senator Joni Ernst and Congressman Steve King are shedding campaign donations they discovered were from the president of a white supremacist group – a group cited by the man accused of killing nine people in a South Carolina church. Ernst and King are taking the money they received from Earl Holt and donating it to a charity fund set up for the families of the victims.
Two GOP presidential candidates will be back in the state this week. Starting tomorrow, Mike Huckabee will be in Osceola, Decatur City, Corydon, Chariton and Pella. Ted Cruz will be in Sheldon on Friday and at Drake University on Saturday. Potential candidate John Kasich will be in Council Bluffs tomorrow.
