The defense in the Hot Lotto trial this week in Des Moines says there is no evidence that Eddie Tipton had contact with the two people involved in trying to claim a winning lotto ticket. They also told the jurors there’s no proof that the former lotto IT security chief tampered with the lottery computer to rig the game.
Iowa power plants have cut back on their carbon pollution by 18 percent over the past five years, according to a new report from the national environmental group Ceres. The group added, however, that more work is needed to reduce Iowa’s reliance on coal.
Iowa and other states would be banned from individual product labeling laws under a bill passed by a House panel this week. The measure prevents states from requiring labels on genetically modified foods.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service is once again urging farmers to plant cover crops, after the latest round of heavy rains. Agronomists say the cover crop will help producers with unplanted fields capture applied nutrients, fix nitrogen, cut weeds and prevent erosion.
Iowa seems to be a healthy place to retire. The latest Gallup Healthways study ranks the state fifth in the nation for overall well-being of residents over 55. The state got props for community, financial and purpose.
The Des Moines Airport Authority is giving the Iowa National Guard a reprieve from possible eviction as it sorts out whether what the guard is doing qualifies as an aeronautical mission. The guard’s F-16s have been removed from the campus, and drone aircraft are being moved in. The guard could pay a dollar-a-year for its lease as long as it had an aeronautical mission.
Rick Santorum and Ben Carson are making several stops throughout Iowa before winding up at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames this weekend. Carson and Santorum are touring the northern part of the state…with 16 events between the both of them.
Downtown Des Moines is getting another major apartment project. The 40-million dollar building bordered by Vine and Market and 2nd and 3rd Streets is the first project in Des Moines for Roers Investments. The building will feature 200 apartments, with a courtyard, underground parking, possibly rooftop gardens, dog wash area, swimming pool and bar.
An ISU professor has joined the ranks of the National Academy of Sciences. Catherine Kling was nominated for her work in environmental human sciences. She’s the first woman at Iowa State to be elected to the Academy.
