Donald Trump did NOT get on the soapbox over the weekend, but he did take advantage of the Fair crowds by landing his helicopter close by and giving rides to kids. Trump also chastised GOP challenger Jeb Bush for saying he didn’t think women’s healthcare needed the amount given to Planned Parenthood.

An Iraq vet who lost to Congressman Steve King in northwest Iowa last year is planning to run for a congressional seat in the 3rd District. Jim Mowrer grew up in Boone County. Mowrer served with Vice President Joe Biden’s late son, Beau, in a war zone overseas.

The states of Iowa and Nebraska are teaming up to support ethanol choices at the pump.  They’re offering retailers new American Ethanol Brand labels for free.  The brand offers a label for all blends, including E-10, E-15, E-30and E-85.

Crude oil inventories are 20-percent higher than a year ago, according to Triple-A Iowa.  So why are gas prices up 15 cents a gallon from last week?  Triple-A says refinery issues are causing prices to climb. Once they’re resolved, we can expect a drop in prices through the fall.

A firm that wants to build a transmission line to carry electricity between Iowa and Wisconsin is working to find the best route. ITC Midwest is trying to select between seven places to cross the Mississippi River. 

A state agency that’s supposed to keep an eye on tax breaks to private school donors reportedly isn’t paying attention to whether those who receive scholarships deserve the aid.  Iowa’s STO program gives a 65 percent tax credit to each donor.  Donations collected by STOs can be used to recruit athletes, provided the athletes’ families meet income guidelines.

Opponents of a change in the state’s rule that requires 4-inches of topsoil be replaced on new residential building sites may be able to turn to local communities for recourse.  The Department of Natural Resources permits local governments to implement stormwater rules that are stronger than state rules.
