Enrollment is growing at Iowa’s three public universities.  The latest official figures for the fall show ISU topping 36-thousand students, the largest enrollment in the school’s history.  The University of Iowa has more than 32-thousand students, up by more than 700 from last year…and UNI has just under 12-thousand students, up more than 50 from last year.

Enrollment’s not the only thing that’s going up…the board of regents has opted to raise tuition by a hundred bucks at ISU and UNI.  The increase will mean an extra 3-point-6 million dollars for Iowa State, and nearly one-point-2 million for UNI.

University of Iowa student governments have joined with the faculty senate in a no confidence vote against the Board of Regents.  The students are objecting to the board hiring a former IBM exec to lead their school, instead of a candidate with academic leadership experience.

Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines will be adding more beds to its psychiatric unit.  The public hospital plans to add 14 beds to the 30 already in place.  The expansion should be ready in about a year.

Governor Branstad is in South Korea this week for a trade mission. He’s meeting with companies that have Iowa ties and with those Iowa companies hope to attract to the state. From there, he flies to Japan for the annual U-S-Japan conference in Tokyo.

Des Moines International Airport says things are not settled between the airport and the Iowa Air National Guard over the Guard’s lease agreement on airport property.  The guard is bringing in ten Blackhawk helicopters and 200 troops for training, which it says should satisfy the aeronautical mission clause, but the airport says the mission won’t need as much land.

Is Iowa ready for Google Express?  The new delivery service has not given an exact timetable of when it will fire up service here, but it does have plans to reach into Des Moines, Davenport and Dubuque. It’s available through subscription service.

Des Moines International Airport is getting another nonstop route…to Phoenix.  Allegiant Air is offering the flights, starting in December.

Ankeny’s police department has set up a crowdfunding campaign to try to raise money for its   K-9 unit.  The unit would be used to track missing persons, detect drugs, and find suspects. The online campaign is at razoo.com/apdk9.

The Maximum Ames Music Festival is on tap this weekend.  The event features dozens of acts performing at venues throughout downtown Ames.
