The new prison in Fort Madison wasn't expected to be fully operational until the fall of this year, even before workers discovered the problem that's keeping it closed…that’s the upshot of a state report. The state is still working to get the prison up to the fire code. The Department of Corrections says it could open sometime this year if it's deemed to be safe.
