There has been a growing number of attacks on the city of Des Moines’ computer network, according to the city’s information technology director.  He told the city council this morning that there’s been an 11-hundred percent increase in intrusion denials. The director is recommending an upgrade in both web and digital services.

An out-of-state company accused of running a phony psychic mail campaign targeting Iowa’s elderly has been ordered to pay 200-thousand dollars to a state fund. Faircom New York agreed to the restitution and will stop sending out mailings.

Note to those attending craft beer events in the future…a riverside party is not a free pass to jump in the Des Moines River.  Two men have been charged with public intoxication after rescue crews pulled them out Saturday.

Second Amendment protection was the theme of a gathering over the weekend at Crossroads Shooting Center in Johnston.  Presidential candidate Ted Cruz spoke out against the church killings in South Carolina, but defended the legal use of handguns.

Des Moines’ city council will be asked today to support state tax credits for six downtown apartment projects.  The largest project would bring 211 united to an empty lot on Third Street, with a 40 million dollar price tag.

An Ohio-based tech firm is getting half-a-million dollars from the state to help with an expansion to Urbandale.  Ventech Solutions will be hiring 200 people once it moves in to its Ridgemont Drive address.

Egg industry officials say it could take up to two years to return to normal production after the bird flu wiped out millions of egg-laying chickens in Iowa and the Midwest.  Egg prices in Des Moines tripled at one point, although they’ve started to come down as bird flu cases have waned.

More jobs have been added to Iowa’s payrolls in manufacturing, education and financial sectors, according to the state’s latest jobless report.  The unemployment rate was at 3-point-8 percent in May.

The Des Moines Arts Festival is later this week at Western Gateway Park.  More than 200 artists will be showcasing their work, with demonstrations, exhibits, performances, music and food.images
