Torch Afternoon News 6-26: Bobby Jindal makes surprise visit in Urbandale, Flooding causes headache for metro, Grimes wants census workers

Republican presidential candidate Bobby Jindal made his first stop in Urbandale as a contender in the race earlier today. Jindal addressed today’s ruling on same sex marriage by the US Supreme Court, saying he was disappointed in the justices and wants to reform the judicial branch.

The metro area continues to feel the effects of flooding from rain earlier this week. Gray’s Lake, Cownie Soccer Park, and Carney Park all remain closed today. Sections of the Des Moines River Trail are also closed because of flooding. And the potential largest cause for delays will be the shutdown of Fleur Drive…from Bell to MLK.

Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines and the Iowa Heart Center are testing out a new device that helps lower blood pressure for patients who can’t use drug treatments. Mercy is one of seven centers in the country testing out the new technology… called Mobius-HD.

The head of Deere and Company says the newly-passed trade promotion authority bill will be a boon for the equipment company’s business.  Samuel Allen says 38 percent of Deere revenues come from sales outside the U-S and Canada.

The city of Grimes is looking for short-term workers to help conduct a special census…one that should lead to extra federal road dollars.  Most of the jobs involve locating households, updating addresses, and interviewing residents.

Starting next week, students wanting to apply to more than one of Iowa’s public universities can use a single application to do so.  The common application portal is at apply.regents.iowa.gov.  The portal goes live July 1st for those who want to enroll for the fall semester of 2016.

A landfill in Mills County won’t be accepting anymore dead birds from the bird flu. County officials didn’t give a reason for the cutoff, but said they might consider taking in more infected birds if another outbreak of the disease were to happen. As of earlier this week, trucks had put in 426 containers…each seven to eight tons….of dead birds and clean-up equipment for disposal.

Rick Santorum, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Martin O’Malley will all host events throughout the next few days in the state. Ben Carson was also in Iowa yesterday, talking about his disappointment in the Supreme Court ruling in favor of the Affordable Care Act subsidies.  Carson is urging Congress to come up with a really appealing alternative to the act, and redouble the effort to repeal the law.

It might be a little soggy, but Kemin Industries is breaking ground for its new headquarters today in southeast Des Moines.  The facility will house nearly 350 employees, and will connect with the Molecular Advancement Center.

State maximum unemployment benefits and injury payments will go up next month.  Iowa Workforce Development says the increase is due to a rise in wages covered by unemployment insurance.
