Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush finished up his latest string of stops in Iowa earlier today with a meet and greet in Council Bluffs. Bush was in Ames last night…and said he’s not afraid of the Hillary Clinton and her recent negative remarks toward him. Clinton had criticized Bush for asking workers to put in more hours.
Wells Fargo saw a drop in profit for the second quarter in a row. The mortgage company reported its net income fell about $6 million, but its fundamental long-term growth is still strong.
The Iowa Air National Guard’s lease has been put on hold…thanks to a vote from the Des Moines Airport Authority Board earlier today. Airport officials say the guard’s 172 leased acres are worth about 5 million dollars a year, but the airport board asked the guard early last year for new lease terms and to cut down the amount of land it leases…there’s now a temporary delay terminating that lease.
Rick Santorum and Ben Carson are making several stops throughout Iowa before winding up at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames this weekend. Carson and Santorum are touring the northern part of the state…with 16 events between the both of them.
The latest USDA crop report shows the corn and soybean crop in Iowa is doing well so far this summer. 82 percent of corn is rated excellent…while 78 percent of the soybeans faired the same rating. Most crops in the state have dried out since the heavy rains of last month…but some areas are still dealing with the damage.
Des Moines’ city council has given Broadlawns preliminary approval for rezoning property across the street from the hospital complex. Emily Maylor says they want to construct a clinic and resident housing.
The brutal heat in greater Des Moines this week is prompting Central Iowa Shelter and Services to use their weather amnesty policy…anyone is allowed in the shelter, even if they’ve already used the shelter for 90 days. They just want to make sure everyone is safe in the heat.
Des Moines gets another feather in its cap…GoodCall Research ranked it the 6th best large metro in the U-S for lawyers and new law school grads. Des Moines was saluted for high average lawyer salaries, affordable housing, job opportunities and area amenities.
Local teens will be able to get a lesson in driving tomorrow in Des Moines…for free. The Ford Driving Skills program is making a stop in the metro tomorrow and Thursday to teach new drivers about defensive and distracted driving. There will be two free sessions each day.
Though the bird flu epidemic seems to have slowed down in the past month, Governor Branstad isn’t taking any chances with furthering state aid to those affected by the disease. Branstad extended the proclamation for a state of emergency through the end of the year…and waived restrictions on the disposal of dead animals. More than 70 cases have been confirmed in the state.
